Financial Reporting Essay Example For Students
Monetary Reporting Essay OnSeptember 28, 1998, Chairman of the U.S. Protections and Exchange CommissionArthur Levitt sounded the invitation to battle in the budgetary network. Levitt askedfor, prompt and composed activity to guarantee believability andtransparency of budgetary revealing. Levitts discourse underlined theimportance of clear money related answering to those assembled at New YorkUniversity. Announcing which has bowed to the weights and deceives of earningsmanagement. Levitt explicitly addresses five of the most mainstream stunts usedby firms to smooth income. Also, Levitt diagrams an eight section activity planto recuperate the uprightness of budgetary announcing in the U.S. commercial center. Whatare the essential destinations of money related revealing? For the most part acknowledged accountingprinciples give data that distinguishes, measures, and communicatesfinancial data about monetary elements to sensibly educated clients. We will compose a custom exposition on Financial Reporting explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now Data that is a wellspring of dynamic for a wide exhibit of clients, mostimportantly, by financial specialists and banks. Financial specialists and loan bosses who areresponsible for compelling portion of capital in our economy. On the off chance that financialreporting gets dark and garbled, society loses the advantages ofeffective capital designation. Nothing outlines the significance of transparentinformation better than the pre-1930s period of anything goes bookkeeping. An erathat left a gorge of falsehood in the market. A gap that was acontributing element to the market breakdown of 1929 and the long periods of economicdepression. A whole society endured the repercussions of falsehood. Families, and retirees rely upon the believability of money related detailing fortheir fates and vocations. Levitt portrays money related detailing as, a bondbetween the organization and the financial specialist which whenever harmed can have disastrous,long-enduring outcomes. By and by, the bond is being tried. Tried by afinancial network focused on accord profit gauges. The weight toachieve accord gauges has never been so extreme. The market demandsconsistency and rebuffs the individuals who miss the mark. Eric Benhamou, previous CEO of3COM Corporation, took in this hard exercise over a couple of brief a long time in 1996. Benhamou and investors lost $7 billion in showcase esteem when 3COM fizzled toachieve desires. The weights are a tangled trap of desires, andconflicts of intrigue which Levitt portrays as almostself-propagating. With tensions building, the appropriate response from U.S. managershas been income the executives with a blend of oversaw desires. Walk of 1997Fortune magazine revealed that for an extraordinary sixteen consecutivequarters, more SP 500 organizations have beat the agreement income estimatethan missed them. The indication of a rapidly developing economy and a proportion of theimportance the market has put on agreement income gauges. The singularemphasis on income development by financial specialists has made the way for earningsmanagement arrangements. Arrangements that are further being fortified to supervisors bymarket powers and pay plans. Principally, administrators employments rely upon theirability to assemble investor value, and perpetually critically their owncompensati on. A developing number of CEOs are recieving more prominent rates oftheir pay as investment opportunities. An extremely close to home motivator for executiveachievement of agreement income gauges. Organizations are not by any means the only ones tofeel the press. Examiners are being compelled by huge institutional investorsand organizations trying to oversee desires. Everybody is looking for the success. Examiners are being blamed for being out somewhere else, with the customers. Manyaccounting firms are going under investigation as a portion of their customers are beinginvestigated by the SEC for inconsistencies in their act of bookkeeping. Cendant and Sunbeam both left bookkeeping monster Arthur Anderson holding a bigolbag loaded with unreported bookkeeping inconsistencies. Reviewers from BDO Seidmanaddressed issues of GAAP with Thing New Ideas organization. The Changes were made andBDO was substitute for no particular explanation. Herb Greenberg considers the episode,A update that the organization being examined additionally pays the auditorsbill. The Kind of irreconcilable circumstance that drives us to scrutinize the ideaof how free the examiners are. These weights permit questionableaccounting practices to jumble the announcing procedure. By and large acceptedaccounting standards are planned to be a guide, not a technique. They havebeen created with proposed adaptability so as not to obstruct the progression ofnew and imaginative business practice. Adaptability that has left a lot of roomfor organizations to extend the limits of GAAP. Levitt focuss on five of themost across the board procedures used to convey inclu ded adaptability. BigBath rebuilding charges, inventive securing bookkeeping, CookieJar holds, Immaterial misapplications of accountingprinciples and the untimely acknowledgment of incomes. These practices do notspecifically damage the apparent aim of the law, however are tricks thatignore the soul and aims of GAAP. Contrivances, as indicated by Levitt, thatare a disintegration in the nature of profit and accordingly the quality offinancial detailing. Never again is this only an issue apparent in smallcorporations battling for acknowledgment. All through the monetary community, companies of all shapes and sizes are utilizing these apparatuses to smooth income and maximizemarket capitalization. The Big Bath rebuilding charge is thewiping endlessly of long stretches of future costs and charging them in the current time frame. .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb , .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .postImageUrl , .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .focused content region { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb , .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:hover , .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:visited , .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:active { border:0!important; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: haziness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:active , .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:hover { mistiness: 1; progress: murkiness 250ms; webkit-change: mistiness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .focused content zone { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; text-improvement: underline; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt range: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-outskirt span: 3px; text-adjust: focus; text-adornment: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: supreme; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3 e52cb .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u3a4353c4f06ff90ed33401256a3e52cb:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: My sound way of life EssayA practice that prepares to simple future income development by permitting futureexpenses to be consumed by rebuilding liabilities. Huge one time chargesthat will be disregarded by examiners and the money related network through a littleconvincing and documentation. In note fifteen of the Coca-Cola companys 1998annual report shows seven nonrecurring things from the previous three years. Fours ofthese charges are rebuilding charges, most essentially in 1996 in thisnote. In 1996, we recorded arrangements of around $276 million in selling, administrative and general costs identified with our arrangements for fortifying ourworld wide framework. Of this $276 million, around $130 million related tostreamlining our tasks, fundamentally in Greater Europe and Latin America. These one time benefits become essentially inconsequential references to thefinancial revealing procedure. Unprecedented charges that are turning out to be unusuallycommon. Kodak has taken six phenomenal charges since 1991 and Coca-Cola hastaken four out of two years. The money related network needs to ponder howunusual these charges are. Imaginative securing bookkeeping is whatLevitt calls Merger Magic. With the expanding number of mergers inthe 90s, organizations have made another time charge to stay away from futureearnings hauls. The in-process innovative work chargeallows organizations to limit the premium paid on the securing of an organization. Apremium that would some way or another be promoted as altruism: and depreciatedover various years. Devaluation costs that affect futureearnings. This one time charge permitted WorldCom to limit the capitalizationof generosity and maintain a strategic distance from $100 million per year in deterioration expensesfor numerous years. A cha rge stowing away in this unpredictable note on WorldComs 1996 annualfinancial proclamation. (1) Results for 1996 incorporate a $2.14 billion charge forin-process innovative work identified with the MFS merger. The charge isbased upon a valuation investigation of the advancements of MFS overall data

Career Advice Resume Help and Whats Your Resume Objective
Career Advice Resume Help and Whats Your Resume Objective If there is one area of life many people want to develop, itâs their careers. Those in favor of personal development are fewer though those pushing for career growth agree that this is important too.Still, a few others are on the fast lane towards spiritual development. You might be in any of these categories but one thing for sure, career growth is necessary. If not for any other reason, at least for the sake of improving your income levels. With life becoming increasingly expensive, you need to ensure progress in order to stay above the poverty line. This is why you will want a well-paying job.And aware of the work-life balance, youâll want a job that you also enjoy, and makes room for personal time. This is critical for your all-round well-being.If so, how do you get that kind of job?Though there may be many ways of getting such a job, one way is quite sure. This is what we will discuss in this article. This is something that you need to do while on the job hunting process.Once you start working and you never managed to get this done, it becomes difficult to implement it. It is like trying to change the terms of a contract mid-way.What is this thing you have to do?It concerns your resume.WHATâS A RESUME OBJECTIVE?Before you get a job, you will have to send over your resume. Your resume is what opens the door for an interview, which once passed, you get the job. There are many things which go into your resume. From contacts, previous work experience (if any), academic qualifications etc.But to set the stage for what you want in your career, there is something called resume objective. The resume objective is what will tell the hiring manager what you want in the career you are in. It points the hiring manager in the direction an interview with you would likely go.It answers some of the questions she has and also says what working with could be like.Your resume objective is a short description of what your career goals are. It also shows which skills, knowledge and abilities you possess and how they are relevant to the company you want to work for.Should you use a resume objective? You may have received conflicting advice on the use of career objectives. That is because many career experts say that this is no longer a necessity. Some say resume objectives are simply outdated. Is this true?It is important for you to understand that career matters have expertise but most of the time, much talk is based on generalities. Advice given is general in nature and when itâs specific, it may not cover all possible situations. The truth is that resume objectives have been in use for some time. And in the course of their usage, one major problem was evident. They turned out to be vague and even irrelevant. This was the reason for advocating for resume objectives not to be used. With this reason, then itâs only accurate to conclude that this opinion does not put everything into consideration.Although the majority agree and have even turned to an alterna tive referred to as resume summary statement, resume objective still have a place. That being said, they certainly shouldnât be used in every resume you write.Doing this opens the door for potential wrong use.WHEN TO USE A RESUME OBJECTIVEIn most of the job applications you will make, you will be better off avoiding the resume objectives. They may not add much value. Moreover, their position in your resume, right at the top after your contacts, might waste very valuable space. So, when should you use resume objectives? There are at least three situations which completely warrant the use of a resume objective. These are discussed below. When Making a Huge Career ChangeWhen changing careers, a resume objective is necessary. This is because you skills and experiences most likely donât match the position you are applying for.And this is an example of a situation which makes a hiring manager see the irrelevance of your resume. In fact, your resume may not even get to the hiring manager. In to dayâs technology-driven world, online submissions of resumes donât go directly to the interviewer. There are far too many of these documents for HR officers to go through. The solution is in using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs).These are computer programs which sit between you and the interviewer. They receive and analyze your resume for relevance. If your resume doesnât pass the threshold set, it goes to the trash. Below is a video of how ATSs work. To avoid this fate, you need to write your resume in ways that will make it bypass the machine and land into the interviewerâs hand. The tips in the above video will help you do that. But for you to be called in for an interview, your resume objective has to do some work for you. Here you will list your skills and experience in the industry you have been working. You will then show how they are relevant to the new industry you want to join.Lastly, show how these skills and experiences will add value to the company you are interv iewing for. When Moving to a New LocationMoving to a new location happens a lot. But in this case, you are not being transferred to a new location. You are the one willingly moving.Your reasons for moving may be connected to your career or maybe they are just personal reasons. You might want to be closer to your family, move close to where your kids school or even just want a change of environment. From a Glassdoor analysis, many people are willing to move for the job. Source: Harvard Business ReviewReasons aside, this is another situation where the career objective comes in handy.First, your resume might be confusing going by the address indicated.Living in one state but applying for a job in a different state might mean that you applied by mistake. Also, the company might assume that you intend to travel across the states every morning and evening to and from work.Though such willingness isnât a bad thing, the company may just decide against it. In practice, it might result in you getting to work tired.Alternatively, due to high commute expenses, you might ask for a higher salary. These are issues which the company is better off avoiding.Writing a career objective and indicating your plans to move will make it easier for the company to accommodate you.Keep in mind that your career objective isnât necessarily about your personal decision. Therefore, adding such information needs to be done in a clever way. For example:Successful online marketer for 2 New York startups seeking to utilize 4 years of expertise and experience in Virginia. When Fresh Out of SchoolAnother situation perfect for using a resume objective is when coming straight out of college. You have no experience but are looking for a job.The company wants to employ people with work experience but you believe you can do the job too. More than that, you want to learn and gain the relevant experience. It is said that hiring managers have only 6 seconds to read your resume. In that case, you have to capture and sustain their interest immediately.Any signs of irrelevance on your resume will make it an unnecessary read. A waste of time and it will just end up being deleted. You will thus have to immediately point out the knowledge you have acquired and skills you possess.Show how these have been used in your school years and the results they produced.Lastly, you should tie that up with the value these skills and knowledge will add to the company. If you do it right, you will stand a chance to get to the interview stage. The interview will be the stage for you to pitch yourself more than your resume could do.HOW TO WRITE A GOOD RESUME OBJECTIVEYou have seen the importance a resume objective has. You have seen the situations which actually require that you write one.But how do you write a good one?Writing a great career objective is not a difficult thing to do. Some guidelines will however help you in your quest to stand out among the job candidates. There are four considerations to make. Your career objective should pass all these tests if your resume is to stand a chance in the crowd. It must be short.Very few people nowadays read long text. This has been blamed on many different things.Among them is a culture of not reading and the high levels of engagement provided by visuals. For example, marketers will tell you that text doesnât engage leads as well as images and videos do.This means that there is a move towards pictures and videos. When you prese nt text, it becomes difficult for many to connect with you. Yet reading is also powerful, especially in the way it helps the mind develop concentration and reduce stress. But since you are writing text, make it short. Writing a concise career objective will increase the possibility of it being read to the end. Ideally, this should not be longer than 3 sentences. The three sentences should also not be long. How do you summarize your skills, knowledge and past experience into only 3 sentences? The secret lies in first writing without considering the length. Let your thoughts flow freely. This is your draft. Write down your skills and experiences then edit it afterwards. As you edit, you will easily see which words to replace. You will also be able to use words which substitute several others. It must be relevant.Making this text short is not all you have to do. Remember there might be a robot waiting to analyze your resume upon submitting it.These robots work by scanning the text for keywor ds related to the job.For example, keywords for a data analysis job might include data, analysis, insight, report, trends etc.Relevance however goes beyond the robot and has to look at the human element of the resume screening process. You definitely have several skills and abilities. If you have acquired any experience, it may or may not be directly related to the current job youâre applying for.For you to obtain relevance, you will have to think of how you can apply these skills to the job.For example, you may have been in a marketing career but now want to shift to business development. These two are somehow related though still different. The example below shows how you can adapt your skills and experience to suit the new job.Acquired 5 years of experience running lead generation campaigns and converting 75% of total leads every year. Looking to utilize skills in negotiations to grow new business at the B2B level. It must be proven. The resume objective is not a platform to do bli nd pitching. This is not where you give false promises.Everything you write in this section of your resume must be verifiable. It must be true. If you say that you have achieved some results in your current or previous job, there should be proof elsewhere in your resume. For example, donât rush to claim how you have a degree in communication but have no indication of it in your education background. This is a problem which can easily occur when using resume templates. In an attempt to get a template from an expert, you may forget to tune it to your specific needs.Since the career objective is more of a summary pitch of yourself ensure you are honest.Otherwise you might get quickly disqualified at the interview because some things will easily come out.For example, if you indicate good communication skills but have trouble expressing yourself, you obviously lied.It must show your value.Your resume objective serves one big role: sell you to the potential new employer. Thatâs what itâ s all about. This means that you are supposed to show how you will add value to the company. This is what every employer is looking for. He isnât looking for someone who will earn the least amount of money to keep costs down. He isnât looking for someone who talks well but performs poorly. In fact, as long as you are delivering results, companies have no problem paying you more. But at this stage, you cannot prove that you are delivering since you are not yet employed. You can only prove your ability to do so upon getting employed. This calls for use of the right words and editing the text to pass the right message correctly.Do not merely provide a list of skills acquired. Instead, show what those skills can do. Show how they can make a difference. You do this by mentioning numbers. Instead of saying that you improved the performance of your team, give numbers indicating the change experienced.Bad Example of Showing ValueUsed effective communication skills to bring the team togethe r and deliver an urgent order on time.Good Example of Showing ValueIn a highly-demanding factory, utilized communication skills to convince team members to work over the weekend.COMMON MISTAKES WHEN WRITING RESUME OBJECTIVESIt is very common to see mistakes when writing career objectives. Even in following these tips, you can still make these mistakes if you are not careful. They mostly happen because of the natural way of communication. When writing these however, some changes in normal communication are needed. Here are three common mistakes you should be careful to avoid.Using Long TextWe have already said that the text should be short. We have even given a recommendation of 3 sentences. But unless you practice writing this, you may find it extremely difficult to manage this length.Follow the advice provided in the section about keeping it short. Just write then edit afterwards. Practice this until you are able to do it comfortably.Avoiding long text makes it easy for the one readi ng your resume. If she can go through it and quickly see what she is looking for, the better for you.You will have increased your chances of being considered for the interview.Using PronounsYou may have noticed that the examples given in this article do not have words such as âI,â âI amâ or âme.âThis is not a mistake but a deliberate effort. In writing resumes, it is advisable to avoid that language. In fact, it is one of the reasons some give for labeling resume objectives as unnecessary. You should use what is referred to as the âAbsent 1st Personâ perspective. This works to make your writing shorter and concise. The writing itself indicates that it is you being described. Here is an example to show the difference.Using the 1st person perspectiveIn my former employment, I ran marketing campaigns and converted over 50% of the leads generated.Using the Absent 1st person perspectiveWorked at ABC Company and converted over 50% of generated leads.Focusing on YourselfYour r esume is really about you. You are using it to introduce and market yourself to the company you hope to join. But the resume objective part of your resume should not be about you. It should be about the company with an opening. This is why we insist that you must show your value. Your value in this case is not what you necessarily think of yourself. It is more of what the hiring manager thinks about you.Just to be clear, other peopleâs thoughts about you are not what determine your value as a person. They can be mistaken and this happens often. But understand that the decision to hire you rests on someone else. As such, you should aim at impressing them and causing them to believe that youâre the best.In writing the objective, focus on the company. Read the job description provided carefully to determine what the company is looking to achieve.Understand the challenges they are currently facing. Then tune your skills, experiences etc to show that you have what they need.Your writing should be focused on solving the problem they have.RESUME OBJECTIVE EXAMPLESHere are some examples to get you thinking and inspired. In several places in this article, we have provided examples as we explain the points. Those are smaller parts of the whole intended to focus on what is discussed in that particular section. The below two are complete and more reflective of what your resume objective could be.Example 1:Computer Engineering graduate from MIT with a record of making a working CPU in 10 days. Acquired great knowledge in transistors and motherboard design, helpful in CPU manufacturing. Looking to leverage skills while working in a team focused on improving computer performance.Example 2:Passionate about building business relationships for an increased customer base. Worked 3 years in converting prospects to loyal customers. Looking to join a marketing consultancy firm which helps SMBs overcome marketing challenges.CONCLUSIONA great resume plays a key role in landing you that dream job. With career objectives being a smart way of spicing things up, do not be discouraged from using it.Especially if your situation is one of those mentioned as requiring a resume objective.

Mentoring Program For Foster Youth - 1978 Words
Mentoring Program for Foster Youth: Addressing Psychosocial and Educational Needs Poor Academic Performance Sets Foster Children up for Failure Education is a crucial element in developing oneââ¬â¢s full potential and a good predictor of future success in life. However, it should be noted that many children do not enter the school system on a level playing field. For example, approximately 75% of foster children are not performing on grade-level in comparison to children who are not in foster care, with some states reporting lower reading and math scores (Colker, Waterstone, Cannon, Rinaldi, Canty, Wettach, Berlin, Rosen Valverde, 2011). The majority of Americaââ¬â¢s 460,000 foster children enter the school system having an automatic disadvantage, facing many barriers to success that are not experienced by their fellow peers (Institute for Research on Poverty, 2015). Their educational journey is influenced by a number of external factors beyond their control. Failing to recognize the plight of these children by addressing their individual needs helps perpetuate a vicious cycle within this vulnerable population. Many wi ll continue to suffer from poor self-esteem with little motivation to improve themselves. This can lead to a variety of circumstances such as poverty, homelessness, and unemployment, thus helping to create self-fulfilling prophecies (Colker et al., 2011). What Happens When Equality, Liberty, And Justice Are...
In consideration of the dawning of a new year, the unabashed continuation of White privilege and the unrepentant devaluation of Black lives, I inquisitively thought of Hughesââ¬â¢ questions in terms of liberty. What happens when equality, liberty, and justice are deferred? Not just deferred for you, but likewise deferred for your parents, and their parents, and their grandparents, and their grandparentsââ¬â¢ grandparents ââ¬â deferred now for your children and your childrenââ¬â¢s children. What happens when substantive and far-reaching gains for Blacks ââ¬â socially, economically and politically are deferred? How about when access to quality education and quality health care equal to that of Whites is deferred? How much longer shall we wait for full equality? How many more generations - deferred liberty? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in his letter from a Birmingham Jail, rationalized that the required engagement needed to fight for equality could not be placed on the back burner. To wait, he concluded, ââ¬Å"has almost always meant ââ¬ËNeverââ¬â¢.â⬠ââ¬Å"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressorâ⬠, Dr. King advised, ââ¬Å"it must be demanded by the oppressed.â⬠What happens when ââ¬Å"demanded by the oppressedâ⬠is deferred? Figurative Language In The Poison Tree By William Blake
ââ¬Å"In the morning, glad, I see, My foe outstretched beneath the tree.â⬠In the poem, Poison Tree, William Blake uses different types of figurative language like imagery, allegories, personification, and metaphors to show us, the reads, about how grudges can weigh you down, or if your grudge towards your enemy is strong enough, it can lead you to murder. It can lead you into a dark path if you donââ¬â¢t let it go. People donââ¬â¢t seem to notice, but when youââ¬â¢re angry with someone, and you tell them, it gets better. If you donââ¬â¢t tell them, it will drag you down a dark path. Disguising himself as the poison tree, William Blake, shows that hatred and grudges will turn you into a poisonous person. Someone who spits in the face of laughter, someone whoâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In this stanza, he said he watered his anger in fears, and with his tears. I think, what he means by this is, the more he thought about it, the more it grew. He hid is with a smile and didnââ¬â¢t let anyone know what he felt. He didnââ¬â¢t try to talk it out, he just let it sit there in his soul. He waited, a long time to even do anything about it. He waited, like a lion stalking its prey. He waited to strike at his foe. He covered up his wrath, he built it up to where he couldnââ¬â¢t hold it anymore. ââ¬Å"And it grew, both day and night, til it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine, and he knew that it was mine.â⬠Once more, William used figurative language to show his anger. Whenever I get here I always seem to get a bit confused. Though through all the confusion, I always manage to understand at the same time. William is letting us know, that his anger grew, all the time he thought about it, every time he seen his foe. It grew until it couldnââ¬â¢t grow anymore. His foe began to notice something was odd about him, about how he was acting, and about his sense of character. His foe knew that he had a grudge, and he just laughed about it. He wasnââ¬â¢t worried, and he rubbed it in Williams face, that he had no fear of him. The moral recovery program is a program that encourages members of the public to live in a moral and correct way. We will write a custom essay sample on Moral recovery or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One idea the program often uses is the butterfly effect. This is the idea that a small deed by one person to another could make this person do an even greater good deed, and so on, leading to enormous good deeds in the end. The moral recovery program also involves elements such as loving those around you, having a sense of justice and persevering through tasks. Although the program also includes subjects such as loving and worshipping God, these religious elements are not fundamental and do not define the program. The benefits of the program If the program is successful in creating individuals with a good moral sense, this could be highly beneficial to society. People are less likely to commit crimes, more likely to help those in need and increasingly inclined to do good in their community. In a sense, the program prevents community problems, rather than dealing with them as they occur. The well known phrase prevention is the best cure springs to mind here, and it is indeed one idea behind the moral recovery program.

Oleanna By David Mamet Essays - Oleanna, David Mamet, Carol Peletier
Oleanna by David Mamet ?Oleanna? by David Mamet The Birmingham Stage Company, directed by John Harrison. The Old Rep Theatre, Wednesday September 29th The Birmingham Stage Company is the resident company of the Old Rep Theatre. Its patrons are Sir Derek Jacobi and Paul Scofield. The company is unfounded and relies mainly on box office income. Company productions include Speed-The-Plow by David Mamet, The Crucible by Arthur Miller and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. The present production by The Birmingham Stage Company is David Mamet's ?Oleanna?. David Mamet is a contemporary writer well known for his shocking and controversial plays. While ?Oleanna? doesn't have Mamet's infamous swearing, it does pack all the other Mamet traits; realistic, ?ping pong? dialogue and lots of conflict. There are only two people in the play, John (Neal Foster) and Carol (Sophie Bold). John is a university professor (his subject is not clear, although one would assume he teaches psychology). Carol is his failing student who he offers to talk to and help her understand his subject. Carol's background is unclear and gets more so as the play progresses. In the first ?session? John uses a number of examples to try to get what he is saying across to Carol who is still struggling to understand. Each time John starts to get somewhere with Carol the telephone rings and interrupts what he is trying to say. That is how act one ends with Carol about to say something which could determine the outcome of the play but is interrupted by the telephone. In act two the relationship between the two characters is totally different to what it was in act one. The act opens with John and Carol in the office again, however the ambience is a lot less relaxed and we soon find out that Carol has lodged a compl aint to the university (tenure committee) because she thinks John to be elitist, hypocritical and she accuses him of sexual harassment. When act three opens John is accused of rape and Carol is trying to get his book banned. When Carol tells John that she is trying to ban his book, this as this is the final straw because she is trying to take away the only thing that he believes in anymore and he ends the play by beating Carol up. All of the action takes place over about month. We don't actually see the action, more the aftermath of it. ?Oleanna? has many themes but the most poignant are sexual harassment, political correctness and power. John gives an example of his ?elitist? attitude when he gives talks about the sexual behaviour of the Rich and poor. He starts by saying, ?A college friend once told me that poor people copulate more then rich people do, but rich people take more of their cloths off Carol interprets this as elitism. Again John displays power when he continuously finishes off Carol's sentences in the first act. Carol strives for political correctness when she seeks Justice for what John has done. Director John Harrison made the set simple because of the budget and for effect. He does add one symbolic twist, there is a mock tree in the background and in the first act a rich, golden light is cast upon it; this is in contrast to the atmosphere and how John is feeling. At the beginning of act two the light has changed to a dark green and this again symbolises John's feelings, the atmosphere and the hostile intentions Carol has for John. In act three the light cast upon the tree is a very dark blue and this symbolises the throbbing hatred John has for Carol. Also the only other lighting in act three was an overhead strip light which gives the feeling of an interrogation room. Harrison also used a raked stage with a small wharf at the end, which was not raked. The raked sage was used so the audience could see better and the seating arrangement was quite steep which made the audience's view even better. Another method used by Harrison was to change John's appearance in each act. In act one John is dressed smartly. He is wearing a suite with a tie and

Unfaithful Behavior Help Essays
Unfaithful Behavior Help Essays Unfaithful Behavior Help Essay Unfaithful Behavior Help Essay In the story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, Margots unfaithful behavior helps Francis to find his courage. Margot couldnt stand Francis not paying attention to her, even though they dont love each other. When Francis talks about lion hunting with Wilson, Margot finds that she cant participate in that conversation. The fact that she cant participate makes Margot feel insecure, and she wants to change the subject to something else that she can join in. In addition, it seems that Margot also is disappointed by Francis, because he was timid during the actual lion hunting. Well, those emotions about Francis makes Margot cheats on him by having an affair with Robert Wilson, mainly to bring his attention back. However, the result doesnt come out as she expected. In fact, Margots affair with Wilson doesnt make Francis pay attention to her. Instead, it made Francis get mad, and that anger finally comes out as finding courage which he didnt have, and he wants to get. At least, Margots affair succeeds because Francis intimidates and gets jealous about it. However, Margots choice for partner, which is Wilson, seems not effective to get Francis attention back. Compare to Francis, Wilson is more masculine and brave, and in the field of hunting, those are only characteristics needed. So to say, Wilson is better in Africa, although he is hired by Francis and under Francis. Therefore, Margots affair with Wilson actually makes Francis feel being robbed something he owns by someone better than him. And, seeing his wife having an affair with the man better than him is enough to make Francis to be furious. Especially, their isolated situation, which accompanies simple relationships, may make Francis relatively feel more betrayed. However, the anger isnt expressed towards Margot, which should be happened. Instead, the affair between Margot and Wilson causes Francis hatred towards Wilson, not Margot. In fact, it is quite natural, because there is no feeling left between Margot and Francis. They are a couple who are just afraid of the possibility that either one of them could leave another. However, Wilson, who is better than Francis in the situation they are in, can be hated by Francis, since he takes away one thing he doesnt have and Francis has, and it makes him even better. Even though Francis expresses his disturbance towards Margot, it seems more reasonable to interpret those expressions as the jealousy caused by Wilson, and said to Margot. However, consequently, Francis anger and hatred helps him to forget his fear. By the time they find buffalos, Francis had no fear, only hatred of Wilson. Francis doesnt hesitate to shoot, and succeeds to hunt buffalos down almost without Wilsons help. Through this experience, Francis felt a definite elation of achievement, which he never felt before. And this feeling not just comes from hunting, but also finding courage he didnt have before and Wilson had. At this point, Francis stops to care about Margots unfaithful behavior, since he isnt inferior to Wilson anymore, and it doesnt matter Wilson take away something he doesnt have any feelings.

The lower court declared the said provisions of law incompatible with Art 6 of the HRA because it penalizes, in effect, a criminal act despite its claim to the contrary and therefore violates Art 6 because the determination of guilt, among others, is single left to the Secretary of State and Art 1 because of the penalty of vehicle detention involved infringement on property rights. On the other hand, in the R(H) case, the court made a determination of incompatibility against s 73 of the Mental Health Act of 1983 on the ground that it violates Art 5 on the Right to Life and Liberty by placing the burden of proof on the applicant rather than the hospital in showing basis for detention of patient in a mental hospital.à As stated, only certain courts enumerated by s 4 can exercise this prerogative. However, the preceding section of the HRA which requires that both primary and secondary legislation ââ¬Å"must be read and given effect in a way which is compatible with Convention rightsâ⬠does not distinguish which courts are obliged or not. The implication is that although not all courts are given the prerogative to declare incompatibility with conv ention rights, all courts must nevertheless take into consideration the issue of compatibility but apply the national law just the same. The remedy in such cases is an appeal to a higher court with the power to declare such incompatibility.

The Income Gender Gap Sociology Essay
The Income Gender Gap Sociology Essay Income gender gap can be reviewed at both the individual and institutional level. It refers to the prejudicial beliefs and discriminatory of individuals, and the policies that restrict the opportunities of minorities respectively. SECTION II THE ISSUES AND WHO ARE INVOVLED Income gender gap is also known as the disparity of income between sexes. It has been a debatable issue ever since globalization takes place. In the context of economic inequality, gender gap generally refers to the differences in the wages of men and women. This can be calculated as a ratio of female to male wages (often expressed as a percentage). The female population has been showcasing their talents and it is depending on how the world accounts and utilizes such talent pool to determine the competitiveness of the economies. Gender disparity in income is an issue that has been surfacing worldwide and economies would have been affected as a result. Thus, it was chosen as I openly felt that corrective measures might not have been designed to address the issue on a global scale. Besides, reports have also shown that the gender pay gap has not been fully resolved as many countries workplaces are still faced with the problem of gender discrimination. In this income gender gap report, I aim to highlight the importance of promoting gender equality. This is in hope that creation of greater awareness among a global audience is present, with implementation of good practices and effective measures drawn that can help further reduce gender inequality. An example of common stereotypes stating males being more dominant and females seen as the weaker sex are present. This happens when both sexes working in the same field are being remunerated differently the male with a higher wage as compared to the female. Singapore is not spared in this aspect. Statistics have shown that there is a closing of gender income gap. However, this is only relevant in the occupations of professionals, services/sales and cleaners/labourers. Statistics have shown that employers tend to empower males with prospective occupation tracks that lead them to having high flying careers; however this isnt so for the females. There is more likelihood that employers entrust women with occupation positions that are deemed to be dead-end, or have very little mobility for advancement. This is due to the perception that women will leave their jobs or labour force at times of marriage or pregnancy. SECTION III WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR US TO TALK ABOUT IT? The principle of equality of opportunity is one of the basic tenets of human development. However, the differences in wage between genders speak about how discrimination brings about inequality and places one at an advantage or vice versa. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), progress in reducing the gender pay gap is very slow in Europe and Central Asia. The gender income gap may have narrowed in some countries, but on an international level, it is still not evident as proven by ILO. Improvising of stricter policies and measures should be done in the light of significance in every country and the most effective means of doing so is through governments intervention. The talents of women which involved the capacity for and skills are not equally rewarded. Also, division of work has always been gendered, which left women often experiencing a disparity in the labour market limited positions and rights in companies. Constrain on the economic growth is one of the impacts contributed by gender inequalities in society. In the long run, society will experience greater negative consequences economically, resulting from this discrimination gender inequalities at work. This is because income inequality diminishes growth potential. With gender inequalities reduced, it benefits men and women, children and the elderly, for the poor and as well as the rich. This in turn would lead to the better advancement in economic growth. However, research begged to differ that such reduction in income disparity between genders would be positive. It is argued that higher inequality would be an advantage in encouraging growth in well developed regions although it will hinder growth in poor countries (Robert Barro, 1999). Although the economy at large is still affected, inequality and growth were believed to have no correlation-concluding that inequality neither drives nor impairs growth (World Development Report, 2000). This is also supported by a recent study on income inequality; a society in which income was distributed perfectly equally with respect to gender would not be a desirable place either (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], 2008). On a fair note during entry level for both sexes, earnings of womens pay have been analyzed in some countries and the increase in earnings is substantial, in addition, even higher than those of men because of their qualifications. This explains that income is based solely on merit of individuals. Still, I believe that this is not practiced internationally, with Singapore a globalized developed country, ranking 84 out of 134 countries, with a score of 0.666 (0.00=inequality/1.00=equality). And for wage equality for similar work, shes ranked 9th (World Economic Forum, 2009). Yet Singapore is still facing these problems at present. For this reason, the gender gap plays a significant magnitude in determining wage. In the perspective of Singapore, females still earn less than males in all occupations. Disparity is even wider when comparing of mean incomes, which implies that males still receive higher wages than their female counterparts as a whole. This is backed by structural constraints in Singapores economy preventing women from attaining similar income. Comparison of the monthly gross salary in the managerial roles shows signs of glass ceiling. The mean gross wage is $7272 for a female, compared to $9065 for a male, and the median gross wage is $5673 for a female, compared to $6450 for a male (Singapore Yearbook of ManPower Statistic, 2009). Predetermined conception that women have shorter employment life-spans and experiences on the job due to pregnancy and traditional domestic duties, such as child rearing and housekeeping is the contributing factor bringing about stereotype against women at the workplace. Studies have shown that these factors accounts for a considerable component of the gender wage gap. Due to womens family-related commitments and priorities, the average woman on the labour market has fewer years of experience than the average man, which contributes to the difference in pay between men and women. Furthermore, an equal position whereby both genders are employed takes into the consideration of National Service. Men trained in the National Service were being favoured, which played a part in the salary differentials. A strong argument cited that because National Service provides men with essential skills such as in leadership, organisation, and decision-making, which is said as to be a pre-requisite in the job market. Awarding them a higher starting salary in the public and private sectors is justifiable. Since National Service is unavoidable, it is deemed as a result that women may be left with little power in the public and private sectors in terms of representation. SECTION IV WHERE CAN WE START TO FIX THE PROBLEM? With males given a higher edge above their female counterparts in the context of wage, it is a prejudice as men is seen as the domineering sex. Thus, with no qualms that such an issue creates inequality in society. Men would be given perks at the expense of the degree and opportunity of womens representation; which are considerably affected by social norms and perceptions regarding womens roles in society. I take the stand that both genders should be given equal benefits based on their qualifications, and hence the pay differentials should not surface. At the individual level, adopting different educational-informational means to alter the aforementioned public perception of womens role in various spheres of society is essential. Using these strategies may boost public awareness of gender stereotyping, ensuring there is minimal social prejudice against women, as well as strengthening a positive insight. With the aim of overcoming uncertain societal nature of womens representation in the labour force, it is necessary to adopt legal constitutional provision on the principle of womens right to be represented. In Singapore, the Government and social partners commitments are affirmed by the addition of an appropriate clause in collective agreements to certify that employers conform to the principle of paying their employees the remuneration based on merit. To conclude, with the implementation of various means would improve the status of female representation and gender equality.

Lady Luck Who :: essays research papers
On Tom Paine's Scar Vegas Mrs. Lady Luck, Who? à à à à à Tom Paineââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Scar Vegasâ⬠takes place in a cheap Las Vegas hotel in the late twentieth century and shows the depressing life of a lonely ex-con. Traveling from Texas to Las Vegas for his sisterââ¬â¢s wedding, Johnny Loop emerges as a simple, unlucky, depressed cowboy. Time after time it seems that Loop gets the short end of the stick. His dysfunctional background shapes his attitudes and interactions with others. Ironic, but a depressing ending leaves him helpless, alone, and frustrated. Sadly, it becomes obvious that he is not going to be able to turn his life around. Loopââ¬â¢s relationship with his sister is complex and distant. Their conversations often are awkward and sad: ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢How come you never tell this guy you got a brother?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"You was in prison.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËSo,ââ¬â¢ I says. ââ¬ËLot of people in prison. Iââ¬â¢m your only family.ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËSo she says. The sky is white and sick with heat. ââ¬ËNice dress,ââ¬â¢ I saysâ⬠(128). Avoiding what they are trying to say, they often change the subject. Clearly they regret their weak bond. At the same time their efforts to improve their relationship are feeble. The lack of interest in each otherââ¬â¢s lives further alienates Loop: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËWeââ¬â¢re are going to polish the floor with his face.ââ¬â¢ On the seventieth the team goes into a huddle. Lucas and I lean against the wallâ⬠(134). Ironically, Loop should be as concerned, if not more, over the ââ¬Å"pervertâ⬠flashing his sister. However, he chooses to stay out of it. His lack of action is not necessarily a sign of maturity, but more a lack of caring. The weak relationship along with a number of other factors further isolates Loop. Johnny Loop is a lonely aimless man fresh out of prison. Right from the beginning he is struggling not only with his money, but also his physical condition: ââ¬Å"The Cowboys cracked my ribs but they are taped firm. I am now in Vegas after frying across the Texas panhandle in July top down because the top was broke up good when I was thrown through outside Amarillo my first real stop after Galvestonâ⬠(123). This murky past conveys his rough background and his inherent unluckiness. By the time Johnny Loop actually gets to his sisterââ¬â¢s wedding he has already hit what he thinks is rock bottom. His complex but distant relationship with his sister along with his background leaves him alone and worn down.
